Microbial Activity in Bovine Rumen
bengal, asparagus agar (Allen, 1951), asparagus agar plus 1:80,000 crystal violet, and asparagus agar plus 1:15,000 rose bengal. The addition of dyes decreased the number of contaminants but also appeared to inhibit the development of the rhizobia. All plates were examined daily for 2 weeks. Smears of colonies which resembled rhizobia were examined. Pure cultures were obtained by the use of bot...
متن کاملMicrobial digestion of hemicelluloses in the rumen.
The ruminant animal is dependent upon anaerobic microorganisms for the digestion of plant materials in the rumen. The resultant microbial cells and fermentation acids are primary nutrients for the animal. Polysaccharides, such as hemicelluloses, are only partially degraded because of the chemical complexities of plant materials and biochemical processes involved in degradation.
متن کاملRumen microbial ecosystem
The inhabitants of the rumen microbial eco-system, a complex consortium of different microbial groups living in symbiotic relationship with the host, act synergistically for the bioconversion of lignocellulosic feeds into volatile fatty acids which serve as a source of energy for the animals. The constraints, imposed by the host and the feed consumed by the animal, under which these microbes ha...
متن کاملMicrobial Interactions in the Rumen and Their Potential Impact on the Survival of Escherichia coli O157
Cellulose and other plant fibre polymers are fermented in the rumen by a cellulolytic biofilm containing a complex mixture of microbial species. Polymer hydrolysis and fermentation are accompanied by the release of plant secondary “defence” chemicals such as tannins, saponins and coumarins. The release and microbial transformation of these compounds [4] modifies the gut environment and the proc...
متن کاملMicrobial protein supply from the rumen
This paper considers the theory, assessment and prediction of microbial protein synthesis in the rumen. The dif®culties of techniques for assessing microbial protein synthesis, as well as the complexity of the rumen ecosystem, have limited progress. Inconsistencies in the literature undermine the value of incorporating advanced rumen models into rationing schemes and limit the exploitation of m...
